I am a fine art photographer based in Marin County, California, USA.

My colour work tends towards the abstract, and I use my photographic tools to portray the world around me as a collage of light and colour – especially buildings and environments that have been purposely designed with a strong theme or palette. My eye is drawn to contrasts at times, and at others to places and things of shared tones. I grew up in South Africa and often feel that the vibrancy of our landscape shaped my vision. In my most recent and not yet completed series of work, I have started to focus on bright lights – shafts, spots and other shapes – and extreme disparities in exposure. I’m interested to see where these impulses will lead.

My black & white work has different motivations and the absence of colour helps me to focus on other elements of the image, particularly lighting. This is why I much prefer b&w for portraiture and my photographic stories.

All my images are made using traditional, non-digital photographic processes. For me, the most important value to be found in film is that it helps me to focus as I work. There is no instant gratification and almost always a limited number of frames available. This means that each shot, angle, subject needs to be carefully considered before the fateful shutter press.

For my portfolio, I’ve tried to select images that properly represent all facets of my work. I hope that you enjoy them!
